DIRECT READING TENSIOMETER with BOURDON MANOMETER - SR 1000

What do I measure?

The total soil water suction in the tensiometer tube (also known as soil water potential or hydraulic charge)

APPLICATIONS

AGRICULTURE
Precise management of irrigations.
Management of calculated water stress levels for seed production.

AGRONOMY & ENVT
Studies on water bulbs in soils.
Water stress management for modeling.
Checking water potential levels before starting a soil solution sampling campaign.
Following water percolation periods.

HYDROLOGY
Water potential measurements in unsaturated soils.
Soil water caracteristic curves.
Studies on water flows : percolation...
Studies on water ressources : refilling of the water table monitoring.
Water balance.

SOIL PHYSICS
Analysis of water tranfers, water potential measurements.

Accepted as the way to measure the water potential in soils, the tensiometer has become an easy to use and very handy tool for field research (agronomy) and managing inputs in agriculture (water). The SR 1000 tensiometer is robust as well as cost effective. Measurements are taken with a BOURDON type manometer. This measuring principle, easy to use as well as very precise, will certainly bring you much help in the laboratory as much as in the field. Its life time is very long and it doesn't need much upkeep work. By simultaneously using ceramics with high breakdown values, you will be able to conduct your experimentation very far without having to refill the tensiometers all the time.

TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS

Range : 0 to -99 cbar (kPa)
Ceramic : 1 bar standard (optional : high flow, consult us).
Manufacturing materials : seethrough PVC for the tensiometer tube.
Water trap : Entrapment system to keep the liquid in the BOURDON manometer. It considerably lowers the temperature influence on the data given by the manometer.
Operating temperature : +5°C to +70°C.
Storage temperature : when empty, -20°C to +70°C; when full of water, 5°C to +60°C. Use of the silicone bung, SMS type, in order to use the electronic tensimeter SMS 2500S to take more accurate measurements.

The standard set

Each SR 1000 type tensiometer tube is delivered ready to use with a Bourdon manometer and a silicone stopper

You also need

An auger to install the device, ref. STM 21600.

A vaccum syringe, ref. STM 21750 to prepare the tensiometer tubes before placing them.

Anti-algae liquid, ref. STM 21310 to avoid algae developpement.

Do the tensiometer tubes need to be prepared ?

As all tensiometers, these tubes have a porous ceramic cup glued on the bottom. Before placing them into the soil, the ceramic must be saturated with gasless water. This can be done with a vacuum syringe, type STM 21750.

How often must the tubes be refilled ?

Under normally rainy climate conditions or in irrigated cultural systems, the amount of water which leaks throught the porous ceramic into the soil is quite low. However, for maximum security, the tubes should be refilled after each measurement.

What happens in case of drought ?

Under dry climate conditons where soil succion is very strong (>-700 mbars) the tube will be emptied of its water . The system will be out of order until the soil succion decreases (by means of rain, irrigation or increase of the water table level). Once the soil is more humid, the tube can be refilled and the system will be once again operationnal for the coming season.

Is there an optional monitoring equipment ?

Please have a look at the standard tensiometer tubes STE 600 series, which combine the 'Bourdon' manometer and an electronic side pressure transducer.
