Hand auger equipments are extremely suitable for soil research. Many models have been developped over the years to suit various demands and soil types. By applying extension rods with a bayonet or a conical threaded connection, augering to greater depths is possible. With hand auger equipment, a depth of 8 - 10 meters can realistically be achieved. The maximum drilling depth strongly depends on various factors such as: depth of the ground water, the soil texture, the characteristics of the material the auger has to pass through (rocks, ...), etc.

The bayonet type connection should be chosen when the operator has to frequently change the bottom tool. The bayonet connection is quicker to use. The conical threaded connection makes the auger more rigid when assembled but requires more time to take apart.
